Do you have a soft lump on the back of your hand or one of your fingers? It may be a ganglion cyst. Learn more about ganglions, and find out how we treat them.
The Hand Center welcomes Jill Putnam, MD to the practice! Dr. Putnam started September 1st.
Injuries and degenerative diseases can cause stiffness and swelling (edema) that won’t go away on their own. When your hands are involved, these symptoms are usually caused by muscles, tendons, or other soft tissues that stiffen around the joints. As a result, your hands get stuck in uncomfortable positions.
If conservative methods fail to improve the functionality and aesthetics of your hands, our experts at The Hand Center may use a procedure called joint release.
During a joint release procedure, we remove the soft tissues that have hardened around the joints, releasing the pressure in your hands and improving their functionality.
Through the use of joint release surgeries, we have helped many of our patients regain the full use of their hands. Here’s what you need to know about the benefits of joint release.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disease in which your immune system attacks your joints. The rates for rheumatoid arthritis have been increasing in the past few decades, leaving many people with pain and inflammation in various parts of their bodies.
When RA is present in the hands, it can cause swelling, pain, and deformities of the fingers.
How we treat RA depends on the severity of the damage. If necessary, we may recommend joint release surgery and other surgical procedures to remove the damaged cartilage or replace the entire joint.
Stiff fingers can occur due to aging, fractures, or degenerative diseases. In some cases, nodes may develop as well.
If we determine that certain soft tissues inside your fingers are causing the stiffness, we may recommend their removal. Once the hardened tissues are removed, your fingers are no longer constrained and you’re able to regain your flexibility.
Painful bumps rarely go away through conservative methods. If you choose to have the bumps removed, you’ll be able to wear your old rings, type, or enjoy your favorite crafts without experiencing pain, and you’ll also get to enjoy smooth, bump-free hands.
If you’re unsure what’s causing your symptoms, or if you’re nervous about trying a more invasive procedure, our team at The Hand Center is happy to answer all of your hand-related questions.
